Predictable, Consistent, Repeatable Performance
This 3M 372L microfinishing roll comes in a broad range of micron grades to achieve reproducible surface characteristics and geometric values that adhere to specification. In some applications, numerous grades are run simultaneously to achieve finishes that differ across the surface of a single complex part. To reduce risk of operator error, we designed Type 2 film in a range of colors – reflective of each grade. The color coding is a useful visual cue, as is sorting width by core size and side and end of roll printing and marking.
For Flawless Geometries
Manufacturers of critical automotive components have little room for error in producing parts to specification. Power generation, life, noise, vibration and friction, fuel efficiency and emissions are all tied to the finishes of crankshafts and camshafts that rotate on increasingly thinner films of oil.
To ensure even scratches in microfinishing operations, 3M 372L Microfinishing Film Roll is applied with micron grade abrasive with very tight dimensional tolerances. The resin bond on these rolls ensures reliable, uniform performance. The high-durability film backing enables grinding even in tight shapes and tight spaces with small finish tolerances. These 3M 372L microfinishing rolls are available in a variety of micron grades to achieve a uniform finish without altering part geometry. Type 2 film used a different color for each grade to reduce the risk of operator error. Color coding serves as a visual hint for easy identification by the eye, along with width divisions based on core size, and printing and marking on the sides and ends of the roll.
The film backing provides a strong, even flat surface that holds the abrasive particles in place, so the abrasive is not squeezed or pressed against the backing. The polyester film backing of this roll is highly conformable and tear-resistant, providing a uniform finish on the contour, and its strength compared to other 3M™ abrasives makes it ideal for high-volume applications. When it comes to the production of critical automotive parts, there should be very little error in producing parts that meet specifications. Microfinishing can be used to improve engine component surfaces and geometry by otherwise removing surface deformation, minimizing friction, and manipulating metal motion.
