The Anatomy of a Versatile, Medium-Duty Disc
3M™ Cubitron™ II Flexlble Flap Disc 967A—powered by 3M Precision-Shaped Grain and a poly-cotton backing—is well-suited for medium-duty applications including weld, scale and oxide removal, light deburring, surface preparation, and blending. Along with the poly-cotton backing, this disc also features an incorporated grinding aid to help it run cool and cut efficiently on heat-sensitive metals. This all adds up to a disc that strikes a balance between fast cuts and long lives.
Flap Disc Design
Flap discs are the ideal choice for a wide range of applications on a variety of metals. The abrasive flaps offer a long-lasting supply of fresh abrasives in a load-resistant design. Designed for use with a right-angle grinder, flap discs allow you to breeze through a wide range of applications with less chance of gouging—even for less-experienced grinders.
Powered by 3M Precision-Shaped Grain
3M™ Cubitron™ II Flexlble Flap Disc 967A features our proprietary 3M Precision-Shaped—a grain design that continually fractures into sharp points that slice cleanly through metal, unlike traditional abrasives, which tend to plow through the substrate. The grains fracture evenly and continuously expose new sharp edges to keep the disc cutting efficiently. The result is that 3M™ Cubitron™ II Flexlble Flap Disc products out-cut and outlast conventional ceramic industrial abrasives.
The 3M Cubitron II Flexlble Flap Disc can do double duty. Since they grind and finish in one step, they can replace bonded wheels and fiber discs and are a time-reducing and cost-effective solution. For weld seam grinding, deburring, rust removal, edge finishing, and weld seam fusion.
The 3M Cubitron II Flexlble Flap Disc is three-dimensional, fanned out from a central axis to exhibit overlapping layers of abrasive-coated, fiber-reinforced flaps. As the overlapping foil layers wear away, new abrasive minerals are continuously exposed for a fast, consistent cut, while the cushioning action of the foils creates a smooth finish. Under normal conditions, the finish obtained with the 3M Cubitron II Flexlble Flap Disc is finer than that obtained with fiber abrasive discs of the same grade. And because the overlapping structure allows more abrasive to adhere to the cutting surface, they are more durable than conventional abrasive discs. Due to fewer process steps and longer duration, flexlble flap discs can greatly increase the productivity of grinding operations.

Attributes:
Material: Flexible Flap Disc is made of high-quality abrasive grain, flexible backing material, and a strong backing plate. Flexible Flap Discs are available in a variety of sizes, from small diameter discs for precision work to larger diameter discs for heavy-duty applications. The backing of the Flexible Flap Disc is designed to provide maximum flexibility and fit, allowing it to fit into tight spaces and reach difficult areas.
Tips for choosing a flexlble flap disc:
1. The shape of flexlble flap disc
For flap discs, there are two shapes: curved and flat. Flat flap discs have a flat sanding surface, while curved flap discs have an upward-angled sanding surface.
From the structural point of view, the curved flap disc is based on its designed grinding angle; all the blades can touch the workpiece, so the ore falls, the cutting rate, and the surface effect are relatively consistent.
The flat flap disc has a relatively flat ground surface design, so it can often produce higher initial cutting efficiency, but the surface effect is rougher. With the wear of the disc, the shape of the polished surface will gradually become similar to the structure of the curved flap disc. At this time, the flat flap disc shows a polishing effect similar to that of the curved flap disc.
2. The number of flexlble flap disc blades
Some manufacturers offer flap discs with more blades per unit area; they usually call them “high density”, “long life”, “grinding giant”, etc., and say that these flap discs have a longer life. First of all, it must be affirmed that the cutting efficiency of this “high-density” flap disc is significantly improved due to the increase in blades, but after polishing, the surface effect may become worse than the original because it is fixed. In the unit volume, you need to insert more blades, so the insertion angle of the blades will be higher. Sandpaper blades with a high angle will produce rougher sand marks than those with a low angle.

A flexlble flap disc is a type of abrasive disc used for grinding, blending, and finishing applications. It consists of multiple overlapping flaps of abrasive material, typically made of abrasive cloth or coated abrasive material, arranged around a central hub.
The key characteristic of a flexlble flap disc is its ability to conform to the workpiece’s contours and irregularities. The flexible nature of the flaps allows for better contact with the surface being worked on, resulting in more consistent and uniform material removal.
Here are some advantages of using flexlble flap disc:
Versatility: Flexlble flap disc are suitable for a wide range of materials, including metal, wood, and plastics. They can be used for grinding, blending welds, removing rust or paint, and achieving a smooth finish.
Flexibility: The flaps of a flexlble flap disc are designed to flex and conform to the shape of the workpiece. This flexibility allows for better control and reduces the risk of gouging or damaging the material.
Consistent Finish: The overlapping flaps of a flexlble flap disc provide a more uniform and consistent surface finish compared to other abrasive discs. This is particularly beneficial when working on curved or contoured surfaces.
Durability: Flexlble flap discs are typically long-lasting and can withstand high-speed grinding or sanding applications. The abrasive material used on the flaps is designed for durability and extended use.
Reduced Heat Buildup: The flexible nature of the flexlble flap disc allows for better heat dissipation during use. This helps to prevent overheating of the workpiece and reduces the risk of discoloration or warping.
When using a flexlble flap disc, it’s important to select the appropriate grit size and disc diameter for your specific application. Additionally, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and wear appropriate personal protective equipment to ensure safety during use.
